The Examinations

The BSc Clinical Physiology is the recognised qualification for clinical physiologists working in respiratory physiology, cardiology, GI physiology and neurology and is essential in order for statutory regulation.

The practical examinations are embedded into the degree course with the part I being undertaken at the end of year two and the part II being undertaken at the end of year four.

Part I Practical Examination

The Part I examination consists of a 3 hour assessment during which candidates are expected to perform measurements of dynamic lung volumes, static lung volumes and gas transfer in addition to demonstrating knowledge of quality control and calibration procedures and the administration of a bronchodilator.

Part II Practical Examination

The Part II examination is a 3 hour assessment consisting of a number of 'workstations' based on different aspects of the syllabus all of which take the form of viva voce examinations. Further details for both these examinations are available in the attached guidelines.

How to Register for the Exams

Access to the ARTP Practical Examinations is now only available through Higher Education Institutes providing the Clinical Physiology Degree.


Guidelines for Training Centres

The RCCP has issued guidelines for training centres supporting students on the Clinical Physiology Degree course.
